28th October, 2004 - (Atlantic Storm)


  • Atlantic Storms are most common in the Autumn when the sea surface temperatures (SST) are
    greatest. Tropical maritime flow coincides with the polar maritime air to the North to form a Low pressure system. The
    wind speeds are greatest where the isobars are more closely packed i.e in the SE of the UK.
    When surface low pressure deepens by 24 millibars (Mb) or greater during a 24-hour period, it is classified as
    a "BOMB" or "RAPIDLY INTENSIFYING" storm. This System was classified a "BOMB" on Wednesday 28th October, 2004
